V. Flusser
I started working on Vilém Flusser using his Towards a Philosophy of Photography to interpret Hubert Fichte’s collaboration with the photographer Leonore Mau. Mau and Fichte closely worked together combining text and image in new innovative ways. My main initial interest, for Flusser, however, was the literariness of his essayistic texts and his systematic practice of multiple consecutive self-translation. At that time, I intended to write about multilingualism and translation in the work of the bilingual writer Vladimir Nabokov. This unfinished project carried over into the fascinating multilingual universe of Vilém Flusser’s life and work. In the following years, I added new interpretative points of view: an investigation into the genealogy of some of his central concepts – technical-image, apparatus, art, border etc. –, as well as a reconstruction of the role played by some of the more influential writers and thinkers – Marshall McLuhan, for instance. More explorations into Flusser’s multi-layered labyrinthine textual net are going to follow.

Starting out from Flusser Archive videos, Steffi Winkler discusses with the two authors of the first comprehensive bilingual biography of Vilém Flusser (“Vilém Flusser (1920-1991). Ein Leben in der Bodenlosigkeit.“), Rainer Guldin and Gustavo Bernardo, and with the audience. The quotation used as a title comes from a video recording of a conversation held in 1988 with Andreas Müller-Pohle and Volker Rapsch, in which Flusser presents himself as a satirist and emphasizes the importance of the existential. We would like to take this provocative sentence as a starting point to discuss the central importance of Flusser’s life for his thinking and writing. Further short video excerpts will be shown and discussed in the course of the evening, revealing a yet widely unknown Vilém Flusser. Vilém Flusser was born in Prague in 1920 into a Jewish family. 1939 he fled, via London to Brazil, from the Nazis, who murdered his entire family in the concentration camps. In 1972, he returned to Europe, where he became famous in the 1980s as a “digital thinker”, especially in Germany.
